Lionel
Messi's hip pain
meant the Barcelona No. 10 returned to the Catalan city from international duty
earlier than anticipated, but because of the nature of the discomfort and how
footballers can play through it, coach Luis Enrique has a decision to make on
how best to proceed these next coming weeks.
Against
Uruguay, Messi already played when not at full fitness, leading to further
inflammation in the pelvic bone, part of his hip, perhaps making matters worse
but also showing that it is possible to carry on playing.
Others with
similar discomfort in the
past have decided to either play onwards despite the soreness while other
footballers instead chose to get an operation, often with an eye on the matches
coming up.
In that
sense, Messi may be rested against Deportivo Alaves in LaLiga on Saturday at
the Camp Nou, especially since an important Champions Leauge match against
Celtic on Tuesday is only a few days after.
Unfortunately
for the Catalans, Messi was not the only Blaugrana to return from international
duty injured, as Andre Gomes also picked up a muscle strain and minor knock.
Howeer, in
Gomes' case at least, his recovery should be much quicker and is more likely to
feature in Saturday's league clash against the newly promoted side.
