The calamitous 4-3 defeat to
Liverpool on the opening day cast further doubt over Arsenal's approach to the
transfer market with the club now turning to Jose Gimenez knowing they will
have to pay his full buy-out clause in order to sign him.
It has been
a challenging summer for the Gunners with an injury crisis taking hold of the
defence before the campaign has even begun.
Arsene
Wenger has looked at moves for Jonny Evans and Shkodran Mustafi but
has thus far failed to find an agreement with their respective clubs.
Valencia
made clear that they would not allow the German defender to leave the club
cheaply despite reports to the contrary emerging before the European
Championship.
At 21
years-of-age Gimenez is still relatively inexperienced yet it is his huge
natural talent that has seen him first break into the Atletico Madrid team and
subsequently displace the influential Miranda.
Prying him
away from the Spanish capital will be no easy task for an English team who are
famed for their caution in the market with the Uruguayan's latest contract
renewal setting his buy-out clause at 65 million euros.
Los
Colchoneros will not entertain any offers less than that amount with Real
Madrid having made tentative enquiries earlier this summer.
You would be
forgiven for seeing Arsenal's late move for Gimenez as panicking in the face of
a crisis but the team needs defensive reinforcements.
Of course it
will be an incredibly difficult deal to pull off as well as being one which
totally goes against the set strategy but it might just be the moment where
Wenger needs to be bold and break free from his self-imposed shackles.
