having a strong squad is vital to compete in multiple cup
competitions but it can also risk alienating players who feel they don't
feature as much as they should, and for Diego Simeone this will be a challenge
given the embarrassment of riches the Argentinian coach has in his Atletico
Madrid midfield.
With the summer addition of Nicolas Gaitan it swells Simeone's
midfield options to include, Gabi, Tiago, Koke, Saul Niguez, Augusto Fernandez,
Thomas Partey, Yannick Carrasco, and their recent signing from Benfica.
Eight players to compete for what is more than likely four
positions across the midfield, given that Simeone always plays with a back
four, could cause problems, especially as after spending what could rise to 40
million euros on Kevin Gameiro, they will almost certainly deploy a front two
with Antoine Griezmann.
Regardless of whether Simeone plays a 4-4-2 or if he switches to
a 4-3-3 or a 4-1-4-1, the competition for places at Atleti will be brutal.
However, it is a pleasant problem to have for the former
Argentina international, who knows that he will need to rotate his side for
LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey if Atleti are to challenge
on all three fronts.
Several of those midfield options have the versatility to play
in different roles which will help the side adapt to different roles and will
make Atleti a far more difficult proposition for opponents to prepare for.
