players experience such bad omens when it comes to being
injured against a certain opponent, as Cristiano Ronaldo does with Real
Sociedad.
With the knee injury that he sustained in the Euro 2016
final keeping the attacker out of Los Blancos' LaLiga opener in San Sebastian
this weekend, an astounding record will continue.
Sunday's trip to Basque Country will be Real's fifth without
Ronaldo in just seven years, continuing the winger's curse when it comes to the
Estadio Anoeta.
Way back in 2010/11, the Portuguese star made his first
appearance away to Sociedad and bagged the winning goal, but it was only after
missing the trip 12 months before.
In fact, Ronaldo appeared in a single-goal win in 2011/12,
and has failed to make the game since. It was a back injury that kept him out
of a 3-3 draw the following campaign, and Carlo Ancelotti rested his star man
in 2014 with the Champions League final on the horizon.
Subsequent knee and thigh issues kept the attacker out of
San Sebastian in 2014/15 and 2015/16, the former as a result of his exertion in
the 2014 World Cup, a similar scenario to his current situation.
For now, though, Ronaldo's efforts will be away from the
Anoeta, and focused
on making Real's first home game of the season, against Celta
Vigo on August 27.
